Anna showed us the way

Introducing kittens to the dogs:

We had previously had a cat before, and while our younger dog, Milo, had been good with our cat from a puppy, our collie cross, Podge had issues with the cat. This was a lot to do with Spider  the cat being so timid and running away, which would just trigger Podge’s chase instinct and we had to keep them separated because Spider would get too stressed.

We lost Spider 2 years ago and really missed having a cat around. I did a lot of research into kittens and dogs and I realised that if approached carefully, we could have kittens and dogs living happily. So we bit the bullet and got a pair of kittens.

We followed all the advice from the various organisations online and at first it was not as bad as I thought it would be. Milo was doing well and Podge was initially jut confused at what the tiny fur balls were and what they were doing in the house. But then he started to get anxious and started the whole barking and lunging thing. That is when I decided we needed help and I contacted Kris Glover for help, as she had really helped with some issues we had had with Milo and other dogs. Kris referred me to Anna.

Anna made a home visit and assessed the behaviour of both dogs and she showed us how to start with the introductions. In the short time she was there, we made great progress with Milo and she even made us feel very positive about Podge. She provided us with a full report and a very detailed step by step programme.

We followed the programme and I would send Anna short videos of how we were doing and she was great with feedback. Sometimes, while we thought we were doing great, Anna would highlight subtle things that indicated Podge was still very anxious. This feedback was so valuable because it really helped us to understand from Podge’s point of view.

Anna had reassured us from the start and while she could not give a timeframe for the ultimate goal of kittens and dogs living happily together, she was certain it would not take very long. In the first few weeks I was still not 100% convinced but continued to work at it, following the programme.

Well I can tell you that I am still in shock as in under 6 weeks we have kittens and dogs living together in complete harmony! There is absolutely no way we could have got here without the help of Anna. She was so patient with me and happy to respond to my numerous messages and videos. She was with us every step of the way and we quickly got to where we wanted to be. I still have to pinch myself when we are all sat in the garden, humans, dogs and kittens just chilling. We even get nose to nose greetings between kittens and dogs which is such a precious sight!

So a huge thank you to Anna and Pets in Practice…you helped us achieve the impossible!

A huge debt of gratitude

I first used Pets in Practise just over a year ago, when we needed to obtain high quality 'reward based' puppy training for the new addition to our family - Bo.   Bo is a Northern Inuit cross, whose role in our lives was primarily as a companion to our 5 year old son, Josh.  Josh had been diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome 6 months previously, and we had heard that dogs make very good companions for children on the autism spectrum.  Indeed, we discovered that Dogs for the Disabled...

Ted became part of our family around 18months ago with so many problems I wouldn’t know where to begin. One of the biggest problems was taking him out for walks.  He was utterly out of control. Dogs, people, children, vans, postmen, joggers, cyclists…….you get the picture.  Another was welcoming guests in to the home. Nightmare. I was recommended Kris Glover, by a local vet, as someone who could help me re train Ted and do so with compassion and kindness. Kris arrived...
